September 22

Almost every week we spend a little time reading poetry. This week we have been reading a poem entitled "Eletelephony." We've read it with different beats. Ask your child if he/she can recite a little of it to you. Ask them about the other poems we've been reading, like "Punctuation Rap" and the definition poems. My homeroom even got to write their own definition poems today.

We are reading a fabulous biograhphy this week!!! It is about Satchel Paige. I believe the children will thoroughly enjoy this story.

We've had a great 3rd week of school. This upcoming week we'll be reading a selection from Island of the Blue Dolphins. We will be reading about Karana and the challenges she faces on the island. If your child enjoys this week's selection, then encourage him/her to check out the chapter book, Island of the Blue Dolphins written by Scott O'Dell.

In Social Studies this week we'll begin our study of "Explorers." Ask your child about what they are learning about related to our study.

What a great first two weeks of school! In reading, we just finished our first story "Frindle." The selection we read this week was an excerpt from the book. If your child enjoyed the story we read this week, he/she might enjoy the book Frindle by Andrew Clements. He also has written The Landry News, The Janitor's Boy, The School Story, and many more.
